What is Leadership is a question that is commonly asked. Some think it is the projection of force, some think it is to bend others to our will and other think it is a hierarchy where the weak are controlled. Leadership is none of these. In fact Leadership is a very rare quality and it is even more rare to see ti executed properly. Leadership is an art, and not one that we get right all the time, but nevertheless an art.

There are two different scenarios to cover, the first is taking on a new team and the second is taking on an exiting tea,. Taking on an existing team we will leave for the next blog.

When we take on a new team it is somewhat easier to either choose out people or initially mould our team to how we want them to operate. It might not be that every single team member relates to the vision or is accepting of it but generally the majority of a new team, especially if you have chosen them, will be mostly on board with the vision. Why would they want to join the team otherwise?

It is particularly important that you start as you mean to go on – and this means setting boundaries. Boundaries are key in all areas of our lives but none more so than in a team. building. For example, if you let that deadline pass and ignore it, your team gets the impression they can do it too. If you are horrible to people, then it sets a tone for your team. If you set your team up and explain the vision well, explain the reasons behind the work you are doing and express a supportive and positive attitude you are much more likely to get an engaged team. Even today people who call themselves leaders set up the first type of team and wonder why nobody likes them. I sometimes hear people say,” they don’t need to like me they need to respect me” I don’t think that you can respect someone without identifying with them. In a working environment, your colleagues and team have to see you as approachable and fair, this might not mean become best buddies but there has to be a relationship otherwise you wouldn’t ever know their desires, career aspirations or that they are off work due to family issues. If we have no relationship or rapport we can’t possibly be an effective leader.

It is very easy to forget that we work with our team every day and we spend an awful lot of time with them. As a leader our job is to facilitate our team to not only fulfill their dreams but to surpass us and take our roles. If we can’t do that then I don’t think we have done our job.

The minute Managers start to think of their team as people is when they start to become leaders.
