No matter how confident we are it’s easy to end up having a few jitters before starting a new role, taking on a new team or going into an important meeting. So how can we take this challenge on in a positive way with a growth mindset?

Well, the reason we have jitters is because we are nervous, this means we have in font of us a growth opportunity. A chance to experience something new and learn all that comes with it. There Might be challenges, in fact there will almost certainly be challenges, but we are more than able to get through them, we got through our entire life up till now didn’t we? Here are 5 tips to overcome those jitters!

  1. Jot down a few times where you experienced change and grew from it.

Write down two lessons you learned and how you re-calibrated yourself with this new knowledge. Remind yourself that you have a fantastic opportunity for growth here and that you intend to grab it with both hands!

  1. Have a plan and be patient! Remember to visualise success!

On the Kuinua podcast, in our episode with Juachi we discussed how important visualisation is. Using this technique can change how you approach the situation, and how others perceive you. If you want to lighten the mood or learn a few tools for negotiation then check out Aden Nepom and Kim Van Vler who talk you through these. Jot down some ideas and brief notes on where you want to get and how you want to get there. This will help you visualise anything you think might come up but more importantly, give you a little bit of control over any uncertainty.

  1. Reach out to colleagues

There might be colleagues who have had meetings with the same people, knew the last manager of that team or who have been in your position themselves. They are sure to have some amazing advice for you so don’t be afraid to ask for it!

  1. You are here for a reason

Whatever way you dice it you are here for a reason. Someone somewhere, even if it is the universe itself, believes you can do this and can learn from this opportunity. Right now you are the  best person to handle this situation. Give yourself a boost, not everyone gets this opportunity for growth! Even if this opportunity is cleaning toilets, there are still valuable skills to learn such as humility and attention to detail.

  1. It’s natural

If it didn’t at least give you a couple of butterflies it wouldn’t be called growth would it. Give yourself a break and let yourself know that the path to growth is through change!
