All of us carry baggage from childhood. This seems to be non negotiable. Even those of us with picture perfect lives still carry some sort of small designer purse.

Speaking with Marlis it is clear that it is hard for parents, always worrying what they will pass onto their kids and how they will affect their kids development.  The parents worry and the kids soak it all up.

When we reach adulthood and we start to examine how we react to the world around us we see who we really are and how we can improve ourselves. We might then look back to the events that shaped our life and start to see why we are the way we are is  because of what shaped us.

Do we have to stay this way?

Absolutely not.

Humans are the most malleable of materials as we can shape today, tomorrow and the rest of our lives however we want.

The key is self awareness. We have spoken to Robert Adolph and John Robinson about this on the podcast. It is a long journey to self awareness but it’s easy to start. Just keep a journal about things that happen and how you feel and how you react  to them. Once you start to see your reactions and your feelings you can see where the patterns start to form.  It can be as simple as jumping from bad relationship to bad relationship because you didn’t get too much attention as a kid, or reacting angrily to the smallest opf things because you copy your family and their reactions.

You will be surprised how much of who we are is shaped by society, the media and our families. It begins when we are a child when we are taught to behave – or more accurately, adopt socially acceptable behaviour, This turns us into a carbon copy of those around us. Yes we have our own thoughts and feelings but very rarely is someone different to the pack so to speak.

However, we all admire rebels and those that don’t respect societal boundaries. I always find it interesting to observe people’s behaviour when I dance in the rain, run with children or  sing just because I feel like singing.

The best piece of advice I can give you is to figure out what you want to change and work on being who you want to be. Dance in the rain, scream and shout at the thunder, run with as many children as you can find and enjoy every second of joy that life can give.
