When I put on the Kuinua facebook Group the title ‘Fake it till you make it’ many many people had opinions about the phrasing. This got me thinking, whats wrong with fake it till you make it. It turns out that it comes across as disingenuous and inauthentic to say this.
Now flip this language on it’s head and you have the podcast episode. How to use your existing personality traits with a little amplification to handle certain situations.
If you had, for example, a fear of public speaking but you knew someone who wasn’t afraid, you could try top model their approach to it. You don’t have to become the other person but you can choose traits or actions you identify with and add them to your tools box. This can help you get through situations that you might find challenging. If you see a leader modelling who you would like to be, would it be inauthentic to take some of what they do and use it to develop your approach, absolutely not.
Sometimes you do have to act a little in life, consider white lies and agreeing with someone to keep the peace. It’s not ideal but it’s not necessarily inauthentic.
Actors do this all the time and John has experience of this. When we act we take on traits of others and we make ourselves into, potentially, another person. However, in the podcasts with Aden Nepom and John Robinson we discuss jut putting a new angle on what it is you are doing. Perhaps changing the way you deal with team members or modelling a new approach to a problem.
Try things out, if you like them keep them and what you don’t like you can discard. In this life you can choose who you want to be and there’s nothing stopping you being exactly who you want to be.
