On the podcast we spoke to Maria Jimenez Ancurio about Intellectual Property and protecting your work.

What is IP I hear you shout, well the definition from wipo.int is the following: “Intellectual property (IP) refers to creations of the mind, such as inventions; literary and artistic works; designs; and symbols, names and images used in commerce”. Intellectual property gives a person ownership over the things they create, the same way as something physical can be owned.

IP is protected in law by, for example, patents, copyright and trademarks, which enable people to earn recognition or financial benefit from what they invent or create. By striking the right balance between the interests of innovators and the wider public interest, the IP system aims to foster an environment in which creativity and innovation can flourish”

So basically everytime you create something you need to think about if you need to protect it.

If you are a seller and have a website it is also important to have terms and conditions for your website and for your purchases. If you don’t have these protections you can put yourself in danger of legal action because you didn’t protect your IP and you didn’t declare your terms under which your IP should be used.

There are varying levels of IP protection from copyright to patents. We go over all this in the episode but in brief a copyright allows the copyright owner to protect against others copying or reproducing their work.

A patent means that only you have the rights to the design, process or invention for a pre set period in exchange for  it being registered on a public database.

There are varying types of protection for images, music or inventions. It’s all about making sure you protect what you need to in the right way.
