When you move roles, whether within an organisation or between organisations, you might find yourself a leader of an existing team. Being asked to lead an already existing, and in some cases, well-bonded team, can be daunting. So we put together ten helpful tips to get you started

  1. Understand who is in the team, their motivations, desires. Who are the quiet ones, the disruptors, the leaders. The go-to guy.
  2. Have 1-1 meetings to get to know your team. You can’t beat having this initial chat to find out more about each person
  3. Establish yourself by showing up and gaining trust. This comes with time.
  4. Stand your ground when you need to but always remember to be firm and fair with your team.
  5. Don’t be scared of making changes but, when making any changes,  make sure you can justify them
  6. Find out from the team what they think could be made better or improved. This is an opportunity for change and development but also to really show your team that you hear them.
  7. Make sure you confront any conflict in a positive way, look for an opportunity to improve. Your team works best happy after all!
  8. Learn your job from the bottom up, i.e always spend time on the shop floor. Your team will be proud of their work and be happy to show you what they are working on.
  9. Show that you are willing to do the hard work, so if that deadline is at 8pm don’t expect your team to stay behind while you go home, get involved and get that respect.
  10. Understand your vision and communicate and enthuse your team. When you all know where you are going it’s that much easier to get there!
