Strong negotiation skills are some of the most useful skills you will have throughout your entire life. Between negotiating a deal at a market, or for a house, or negotiating a higher pay rise, these skills will always serve you well.
So what are the top tips to bear in mind when starting out?
On the Kuinua Course we provide a download pdf that you can use to prepare to negotiate, in this we talk about the following items that are key to prepare.
What are your tree items you are happy to let go – this is critical for negotiations as you can figure out what you don’t mind losing. If the opposite side suggests this then you won’t mind as you won’t lose anything.
The three things you absolutely cannot move on – it is crucial to know what your red lines are. When the opposite side hit one of your red lines you can try negotiating with one of the three things you don’t mind giving up.
What would the best deal look like? Here it is key to remember that a good deal works for both sides so it is important to sketch out a deal that is successful for you but also for the opposing side. Writing this down allows you crucial prep time to think through what the final deal might look like, or how you might want it to look.
Listen.
The best thing to do throughout any negotiation is listen. Listen, listen some more and then listen again. You can pick up the smallest of nudges or information kernels from listening. If, for example, the opposite side starts talking about something you don’t want to concede but then starts discussing something you don’t mind conceding you have the power then to reluctantly offer what you don’t mind losing. This could result in a win-win.
Preparation is key to a successful negotiation, closely followed by listening. Try these tips in your next negotiation!
