BJ Stephens, a seasoned public speaker joined us for one of our Kuinua Podcast Episodes. Not long after I saw a poll on Linked In where many people were stating that they experienced nervousness way before any public speaking engagement, right up to the end of the talk. Many then critiqued their performance and got worried that it wasn’t good enough.
We never fear, Kuinua is here.
Here are our top ten tips for public speaking (and the first is to enjoy it!)
- Enjoy it – everyone is here because they respect your expertise and are interested in your work and your viewpoint.
- Nervousness Is Normal so recognise it is there, acknowledge it and let it sit with you
- Know Your Audience. You may have been given an indication of how big the audience is and the make up of it so consider aspects like, a non technical audience needs more explanation and less technical language, a technical audience can skip the basics. Do you have any declared disabilities in the audience that might make it difficult to interact with any technological surveys or slides that you have.
- Organize Your Material in the Most Effective Manner to Attain Your Purpose. When a presentation starts, some people check the slide count in the bottom corner. Don’t be that person that starts on slide 1/52. Be the person that limits text and instead gives a fun, charismatic monologue.
- Watch for Feedback and Adapt to It. If the audience nods off its time to crank the pace up a notch – and yes this has happened to me at a Mathematics Conference full of Elderly Men.
- Let Your Personality Come Through. Yes, People are still here to interact with you and your viewpoint, you are the star turn!
- Use Humor in your talk, everyone likes a good icebreaker.
- Tell Stories, people respond to this really well as the human brain is wired for story telling!
- Use Effective Language. Language is a tool to help express yourself so don’t be afraid to get that thesaurus out.
- Don’t Read Unless You Have to – worst. thing. ever. Like, just forward your slides to me if you are going to read. I can read them in my own time.
So now you have some top tips for public speaking you are unstoppable! Own that stage and the fact that people are there to see and hear from you!
