I took one look at the heading and thought, if good leadership were in place then this heading wouldn’t exist. Let me tell you why..
As an Entrepreneur, I have worked remotely for many years and enjoy the freedom. My Fridays mornings are spent wrapping up the last week and preparing for next week while Mondays are emails and prep for the week ahead. Tues-Thurs include meetings but I have calendly which blocks out time so I know when my meetings will be. I don’t work Friday Afternoons and I finish early during the week on days I don’t have podcast recordings – which again are scheduled in blocks. I never work weekends or holidays – not even an option. If I have a remote Consultant we agree on a weekly meeting and deadlines and then they work how they please.
However, inside the organisations I have worked I have noticed that it is commonplace, despite having a scheduling feature on outlook, that meetings are unceremoniously dumped into one’s inbox. This can lead to feelings of frustration and can even lead to conflict when meetings are triple booked and everyone needs you at theirs. It might be that X is only free then or Y has to happen then. However, this reflects poor planning practices. This is why regular meetings should be booked in advance and project meetings should be put into the calendar at the earliest opportunity.
In conclusion, It’s time to give all workers the same respect and not just book meetings in their calendar 1. without checking their calendar and 2. without asking.
I will be speaking on this topic of managing teams effectively and respectfully on a course later this year with John Riordan but in the meantime we have the following amazing podcasts on this topic!
